Stansted Parking When Your Flight Is Delayed or Cancelled
A delayed return costs you nothing at the car park. A cancelled outbound needs a phone call.

Travel News

Stansted sits directly on the M11 at junction 8, and that junction is where journeys go wrong. Allow an extra half hour at peak times and check for closures the night before.
The airport has an unusually simple approach — one motorway, one junction, one terminal — which makes the drive straightforward most of the time and concentrated when it is not.
From London and the south — M11 northbound, junction 8
From Cambridge and the north — M11 southbound, junction 8
From Essex and the east — A120 westbound, straight to the airport
From Hertfordshire and the west — A120 eastbound
From the M25 — junction 27 onto the M11 northbound
Whichever way you come, the final stretch is the same, and the airport is signposted clearly from several junctions out.
The drive itself is rarely the problem. The M11 junction 8 queue in the morning peak is.
Your normal journey time plus thirty minutes between 7am and 9.30am or 4pm and 6.30pm.
Outside those windows the M11 moves well and you can work to standard timings. Very early departures actually have the easiest drive of the day, which partly offsets the unpleasant alarm — and Stansted has a lot of them.
Then add the transfer. If you have booked an off-airport site, allow twenty to thirty minutes more for the shuttle and any wait.
Worth two minutes the night before, particularly for an overnight departure.
The M11 has a long history of overnight closures for maintenance, and because it is the only motorway approach there is no convenient parallel route. A closed carriageway at 3am means a long diversion on A-roads.
That single-approach fact is the main argument for checking traffic reports before bed. At a better-connected airport you could reroute; here you mostly cannot.
Stansted charges to use the terminal drop-off, and it is higher than many people expect.
For a short trip the sums can be closer than you think, especially once you count the fuel for two round trips by whoever is driving you, plus that charge at both ends.
There is a free drop-off area further from the terminal with a short shuttle, which is the sensible compromise if someone is taking you. Compare it against a real parking quote before deciding — for anything beyond a couple of nights, parking is usually simpler and often cheaper.
Follow signs for your car park by name, not for the terminal. This is the most common mistake on the final approach.
The terminal signs lead to the charged drop-off area. Your booking confirmation carries the car park name and postcode; navigate to that postcode rather than to "Stansted Airport".
For off-airport sites the postcode is essential, since several operators run from the same estates around Takeley and Bishop's Stortford and the signage is modest. Details for each option are on the parking guide.
Fuel the car — not every station near the airport is open overnight
Check the M11 for planned closures, since there is no easy alternative route
Save the car park postcode in the satnav before you leave
Check the registration on your booking matches the car you are taking
Screenshot the booking, in case signal is poor on site
It costs nothing to choose well, and it changes the return more than most paid upgrades.
Pick an end bay or a space beside a wall, which halves the number of doors that can open into your car. Avoid the rows nearest the shuttle stop, where trolleys and traffic concentrate, and avoid parking under trees on a long trip.
Then photograph the bay number, the row letter and the level before you walk away. Ten seconds there saves a long search in the dark when you come back tired.
Plan the return more carefully than the outbound. You will be tired, possibly landing late, and the drive is the same length.
If home is more than two hours away and you land after ten at night, a shorter transfer is worth paying for. On long trips consider how the car will have fared too — three weeks outdoors in winter is a real test of an older battery.
The M11 at junction 8 from north or south, or the A120 from Essex and Hertfordshire.
Your usual journey time plus about thirty minutes in the morning or evening peak, and another twenty to thirty for an off-airport shuttle.
Not at the terminal, which is charged. There is a free drop-off area further out with a short shuttle.
It is the only motorway approach, so an overnight closure means a long diversion rather than a parallel route.
To the car park postcode on your confirmation. Terminal signs lead to the charged drop-off area.
